SMALL VOICE, BIG WORLD

I have recently spent some time at Linzi Boyd’s BOB School (business of brand). One of the items on the curriculum was finding our Micro Voice.

My auto-response to this item on the agenda saw me scanning my brain for any possible moments in my life where having a Micro Voice would have come in handy. None found.

I moved into rapid heel-tapping mode, sitting at the table, keeping my head down and hoping that the Micro Voice section would be over fast so that we could get onto the more interesting and commercial parts of the agenda.

It was not to be. A Micro Voice was going to be found deep within each of us however long it took. And boy did it take some time – particularly for me.

So I reluctantly submitted to the process.

Here’s the deal. I am discovering that being aged 45 ¾ is quite tricky. We are the generation of “digital immigrants”. Most of our business role models and those that mentored us early in our careers have managed to get away without having much (if any) digital profile. I have had this nagging doubt about my lack of participation in social media for many years. However, whenever the voice inside my head gets too loud, I do a quick Google search for my personal gurus and mentors. I discover that they are generally not playing in the social media space, breathe a sigh of relief and get back to business as usual. This also involves wilfully ignoring the fact that nearly all the people we hire (and increasingly our customers) are digital natives. Read more...
